Who We Are
President:
My name is Andrew Mark, and I am a senior at Horace Mann School in New York City. Like many others, I receive too many texts and emails, but not enough letters.
Through my work supporting seniors in many different ways, I have learned how older adults are affected by isolation and loneliness. Many of the seniors that I speak to either have trouble using technology to connect with others or prefer the more personal aspects of a handwritten letter.
After thinking through ways to combat social isolation and loneliness in older adult populations, I came to the conclusion that one great way to connect seniors with a supportive community would be through writing personalized letters.
In my school community and with partner associations, I began organizing events to write letters. We now distribute letters from NYC teens to older adults through community partners. By harnessing the largely lost art of letter writing, I hope to tackle loneliness and promote connectedness and authentic communication for the benefit of older adults.
